The Houston Texans face a firm deadline to complete a long-term extension with quarterback C.J. Stroud.
General manager Nick Caserio confirmed that contract discussions will cease before the team opens the regular season against the Buffalo Bills on September 13.
If the two sides do not reach an agreement before kickoff, the franchise will pause all contract talks until the offseason.
“We’ve had productive discussions, I would say,” Caserio told reporters. “And the reality is, we’ll either get it figured out before the season starts, and if we don’t get it figured out before the season starts, then that’s something we address in the offseason.”
Contract Structure and Team Options
Stroud remains under contract for two additional seasons after Houston exercised his fifth-year option for 2027 in April.
The decision guarantees Stroud $25.9 million for the 2027 season and gives the front office leverage through the 2027 campaign before potentially utilizing the franchise tag.
Stroud has maintained a hands-off posture regarding the business negotiations throughout training camp.
“You have to keep the main thing the main thing,” he said in July. “You have to just focus on one day at a time, one play, and the football is what’s gotten me to even have the conversation, to be able to get a second contract.”
Production Profile and Negotiation Parameters
Since Houston selected him second overall in the 2023 NFL Draft, Stroud has compiled a 28-18 regular-season record and led the team to three consecutive playoff appearances.
Following an Offensive Rookie of the Year campaign featuring 4,108 passing yards, 23 touchdowns, and five interceptions, his statistical volume dipped over the subsequent two seasons.
In 2025, Stroud completed 64% of his passes for 3,041 yards, 19 touchdowns, and eight interceptions while missing three games due to a concussion.
Postseason turnovers added further complexity to negotiation dynamics, as Stroud committed seven total turnovers across two playoff contests in January.
Despite those postseason struggles, head coach DeMeco Ryans reasserted his long-term commitment to Stroud during offseason program evaluations.
Analysts say the Texans have quietly had one of the most productive offseasons, securing Stroud’s contract before week one could add to that.
